The Midway celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2007. This Jamaica Plain bar and club offers live music, food and beverages. Save the stage for the gays. Queereoke is definitely an avenue for Thursday night aural debauchery. Although, the show doesn't usually get started until after 10pm, once it does... there's nothing that can stop it. Well, nothing except the ten to twenty minute hip hop breaks, which make for longer waits to sing, but overall the party gets hoppin'... after all, the queers DO love to tear it up on the dance floor. Cash only!

Eclectic lighting fixtures made out of clear buckets, lights, and nostalgia hang from the ceiling. A signpost stands in the middle of the room , adding to the atmosphere, by directing you to the towns of Kilkenny, Tillargan and Dunboyne.
The Banshee, located in Dorchester, offers a full Irish breakfast, with Irish sausage and bacon, black and white pudding, tomato, beans, and home fries. You'll also find bread pudding and cottage pie along with all the other pub grub. Classic Irish bar fare at a decent price. Thursday night they spin traditional Irish music after 9pm. Very authentic and a great local bar.
This spot probably has the best coverage of British sporting events of any bar in Boston. American sports are shown as well, so regardless of what your sport is, you will see it on one of many plasma screens. They show everything from NFL Football on Sundays to English Premier League soccer, to Rugby Tri-Nations Cup action.

Mike's City Diner is located in the South End. This is as authentic as diners get, right down to the black-and-white checked tablecloths. Harried but friendly waitresses dart from table to table with trays of food, stepping around hungry patrons waiting for a seat. Piped-in Elvis Presley croons over the din of noisy customers. Regulars get the nod from behind the counter; coffee arrives without a word being uttered. A cross-section of South Enders and urbanites makes for prime people-watching, and no one seems to mind the cramped quarters.
Tip: Portions are uniformly huge; couples and cash-strapped students should consider sharing.

TVs are spread over three levels, and live music is featured on the weekends. Perfect pints of Guinness, usually delivered by friendly Irish waitresses, prove popular. cozy bar with old Boston knick-knacks that makes it feel like your grandmother's attic...surprisingly diverse (and good!) menu for a bar...get there early before the crowd takes over for the popular Fri and Sat night dance parties.
Caters to students, frat boys, the "meat market" of women who are obviously trying to get drunk and picked up on, and the great many 20-something dudes with collared shirts (sleeves rolled up!) and too much hair gel.

Think coffeeshop spiked with alcohol. Overlooking the Mass Pike sits this quirky alternative pit stop, with a truly diverse clientele, an alt-rock soundtrack, and a skater-punk-themed decor. A busy lunch crowd lines up for hummus platters ($6.50), sandwiches and wraps ($6.20-7), and salads ($5.75-6.75). At night, the Other Side feels much more like a bar, as friends relax over pitchers of domestic and imported beer ($16-20) and chips and salsa. Despite the traffic, the patio makes a surprisingly good place to enjoy one of the special lattes ($4.25), smoothies ($4.50), or desserts; a cozy second-story loft adds another seating option. Half sandwich or salad with soup combo $6.75. The Other Side Cafe, or 'Osc' as it is known by some of the spindly hipsters who frequent it, is also known for its chili.
The outdoor seating is a lot less posh than other Newbury cafes, but has a funkier people-watching--the crowd that frequents Other Side can be a lot more fun to watch and talk to!
They offer brunch on the weekends, and breakfast food all day during the week.
Other great offerings include movie nights and trivia.

For Boston's Best Margarita, visit the younger sibling to the Sunset Grill & Tap Owned by the same people, BU hot spot Sunset Cantina is set along the busy, student-populated stretch of Commonwealth Avenue. A suitably young crowd fills the expansive dining room to nosh on huge plates of appetizers while watching sporting events or listening to the contemporary jukebox.
With over 150 different types of tequila and 38 beers on tap there's a drink for everyone. It's best to go with a group of friends so you can all share in the humongous portions! Get a pitcher of sangria for the table or try out a few of their delicious margaritas (my favorite being the Lime & Coconut Margarita - on the rocks with sugar, if you ever want to buy me a drink).
Looking for a free late-night snack? Check out the complimentary "midnight madness" buffet on Sundays-Tuesdays midnight to 1am (2 drink minimum). Enjoy All-U-Can-Eat BBQ Texas Ribs on Mondays and Tuesdays, all day and night for just $12.95. Don't miss trivia night on Mondays for a chance to win gift certificates!

With over 112 beers on tap, this “University of Beer” could offer you a new brew every night of senior spring and still have more than 300 bottled varieties left over. Believe it or not, however, pints, yards, and table taps are not the only reasons that serious scholars of beer matriculate here: unlike at many other bars, the food is actually good. Old-fashioned favorites like huge burgers ($5), BBQ ribs ($15), and nachos ($6-10) help fortify your stomach against the onslaught. If you feel like shaking things up, try a “beertail” like the “Dirty Ho”—half Lindemann's Framboise and half Hoegaarden ($6)—or “Black Magic”—a mix of Magic Hat #9 and Guinness ($5). A full menu until 1am will satisfy any late night craving. Entrees $5-20.

I would say the only downsides are that they close fairly early and that parking is tough to come by on weekends. But the hike is worth it if you are looking for a place with good beer, good people, and a great atmosphere. Check out the complimentary "midnight madness" buffet on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights, midnight to 1am.
