JamaicaPlain
Jamaica Plain (JP) is a neighborhood located in the center of the
City of Boston.
Jamaica Plain, or 'JP' as it is commonly refered to by its residents, is neither "Jamaican" nor a plain. Though marked by a few stretches of hillless terrain, JP's numerous parks, rows of triple decker homes and occasional mansion-esque Victorians are often situated on the banks of long hills for which JP has become a popular winter sledding destination. The name Jamaica, in the context of Jamaica Plain, is thought to be an Anglicization of the name Kuchamakin, a sachem of the Massachusett tribe. Some residents of JP consider it an enclave and its lack of proximity to any major thoroughfares also encourages that view. Its relatively 'off-the-beaten path' qualities help maintain the distiction that attracts residents and businesses which, though diverse, are politically very liberal. At times, the number of political activists as well as visual artists who inhabit JP make it seem like a microcosm of the 60's.
