Romantically named for a fictional estate in a Sir Walter Scott novel of the nineteenth century, this Jamaica Plain enclave was once a summer estate of the wealthy Minot family. Later, it was developed by the Boston Dwellinghouse Company in the early twentieth century along the ideas of the Garden City movement. The BDC built cluster of small, affordable, quirky cottages grouped around small patches of green common land -- as an alternative to the slums many working people were forced to live in. Many of the streets here have "bourne" in the name and curve along the hilly area. Woodbourne is a wonderful part of JP and a national historic district.
